The SOUTHEAST IS ON FIRE… with rock, that is. Join the vote!

American Bands-Who are the best?

1+Record+01

The Southeast was probably the hardest of the regions to work with. To be frank, it’s a weak place for rock bands. Country? Funk? Soul? R&B? All are more common in the Southeast.

So I probably bent the rules here a little bit. I take full responsibility for it! Which means this Play In is probably the most important of all. Choose wisely.

I also made a call. The Southeast Region contains a VERY small piece of Oklahoma in it.

Why is this important?

American Bands-Who are the best?

No, Pylon did not make the Southeast Region. This was probably the hardest region to select and seed. The Southeast is not as much a place for Rock as it is for Country, Blues, and other musical forms that don’t apply.

Having said what it’s not, here’s what it is:

The Southeast Region includes:

Neutral Milk Hotel

Lynyrd Skynyrd

the B52s

REM

James Brown and the Fabulous Flames

Superchunk

The Black Crowes

Booker T and the MGs

The Meters

The Neville Brothers

The Allmann Brothers Band

The Ben Folds Five

KC And the Sunshine Band

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Kings of Leon

Elvis and the Jordanaires

Had a comment from reader James Gerber today that made us think.

What about love Heart?

What about Heart, indeed! One of the more successful bands, both artistically and commercially, to come out of the PNW. Ann and Nancy Wilson and co are indeed quite a seminal American rock band.

After careful consultation with the authorities, we determined that Heart would face off against the Violent Femmes in a play in game for the tournament.

So, readers, we put it to you. Who deserves to be in the tournament more?

We were on our way back from Williamburg and having seen the Sonics. I intimated that I thought that The Sonics might be the best American rock band that had ever been. They surely had been great that night.

Which got me thinking. We were big music nerds. Could we somehow rank the best rock bands in the US? Could we logically and rationally pit them against each other? Write about why we felt the way we do?

Yeah sure. Why not? We’re smart, well read, decent writers. We could do it, and we would.

So here’s the deal.

We compiled the 64 best American rock…
